SECL admitted : loss of Rs 5.39 crore due to economic blockade of land displaced people, CPI(M) leader Prashant said -- struggle to provide employment to every account holder will intensify

Korba. SECL has admitted that it has suffered a loss of Rs 5.39 crore due to the two-day economic blockade organized by Chhattisgarh Kisan Sabha on 11-12 September. This has been acknowledged in the letter number 2256 dated 21.09.2023 sent by Kusmunda area mine manager Sanjay Mishra to higher officials. This admission is also a proof of the gaining momentum of the movement being carried out by the land displaced people in Korba district demanding employment and rehabilitation. The coal management is troubled by the continuous agitation against it and has now taken refuge in the court to stop it.

Kusmunda General Manager has filed a case in the Katghora Civil Court against four workers of CPI (M), Kisan Sabha and Bhoo-visthapit Rojgar Ekta Sangh, citing the loss caused by the economic blockade. Along with this, it has also made Chhattisgarh government a defendant and has demanded from the court to issue an order to permanently ban the activities of the agitators and the movements.

In his suit, General Manager Sanjay Mishra has said that SECL is a public sector undertaking of the Central Government, which has been mining and transporting coal for the last 30-35 years. It acquires land from time to time with the help of the State Government for expansion of the mine and provides facilities to the displaced persons as per the policies and provisions laid down by Coal India and provides employment to those recommended by the Land Acquisition Officer. But some anti-social elements are continuously agitating to put undue pressure on the management to provide benefits and employment to ineligible people, due to which SECL is facing financial loss. Therefore the movements should be banned. By 'anti-social elements', SECL is directly referring to the respondents, which also includes CPI(M) leader Prashant Jha.

CPI(M) leader Prashant Jha has called this suit a conspiracy by the management to crush the movement of land displaced people. He has also expressed strong objection to the management calling the agitating leaders 'anti-social elements'. He said that the right to form organizations and fight for our legitimate demands is a constitutional right. The CPI(M) leader said that will SECL tell whether all the cases to which it has been forced to provide employment due to the movement are false? Holding SECL responsible for the agitation of the land displaced people, he said that the reality is that Coal India is refusing to provide employment to the farmers who gave up their land and the last support of their livelihood in the 'Nation's Vikas Yagya'. He said that in the coming days, the agitation against the anti-employment policies of Coal India will be further intensified and the workers of CPI(M) and Kisan Sabha are not going to be intimidated by the threat of court proceedings. He warned that the future of SECL officials who want to ruin the future of farmers will be decided by the movement of the displaced people.

It is noteworthy that for the last two years, the displaced farmers have been sitting on an indefinite strike in front of the Kusmunda General Manager's office demanding resolution of pending employment cases. But till date the management has not even taken the initiative to have a positive conversation with them. There is a possibility that this movement will become more violent if the management now takes the help of the court to end this movement.
