Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Subaltern Journalism Award 2024 to be Held in Delhi

New Delhi: India is set to host the world’s first Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Subaltern Journalism Award, named in honor of  Dr. Ambedkar who is recognized as champion of Human rights and Symbol of Knowledge.  This Historical  award will take place in New Delhi.

The award aims at  to recognize and honor the often unacknowledged journalists, photographers, and bloggers who, while not affiliated with major newspapers, prominent news channels, or large cities, play a crucial role in reporting from rural areas, villages, and small towns. These individuals connect with the world through news portals and personal blogs, delivering authentic news from places where mainstream media often falls short or ignore the facts  While some of the journalist may be linked with major news agencies, the majority operate without substantial resources.

These journalists bring to light stories from their communities, exposing truths and realities from remote regions, including tribal villages and areas affected by Naxalism, terrorism, and conflict such as Manipur, Dantewada, Ladakh, and Kashmir. They are the ones ensuring that accurate and truthful news reaches the public.

In contrast, over the past two decades, the so-called nationalist media in the country has become a subservient mouthpiece for those in power. Instead of questioning the government, this media tends to blame the general public or the opposition, while concealing the true state of the country and its societal issues. At times, it seems that media itself has become a major threat to democracy, despite its fundamental role in upholding truth and exposing falsehoods.

In this context, media professionals emerging from marginalized and impoverished backgrounds have become symbols of truth and integrity. Their efforts are essential in preserving democracy in our country, unlike media controlled by capitalists, which often merely flatters the powers that be.

The Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Award is named in tribute to Dr. Ambedkar, celebrated globally as a champion of human rights and a symbol of knowledge. His efforts to uplift marginalized communities in India have been unparalleled, making this award both a tribute to him and a recognition of journalists working in similar fields.

Established by Surender Kumar, editor of Townhall Times ,A Daily Hindi News Paper  Delhi, the award aims to protect and promote truth and democracy. Through this award, a message is being sent that we are neither silent nor compromised; we will continue to fight for our country and democracy.

The award will be presented by renowned journalists from notable non-mainstream newspapers and channels, who, along with distinguished social organizations, will grace the event.
